A few days ago we visited the Soi Dog Foundation in Phuket, here they take in dogs and cats found homeless, abused or neglected in Thailand and give them a meaning to life, incredibly they have almost eradicated the existence of Thailand’s street dogs. Also the charity are working extremely hard to end the travesty that is the dog meat trade in Asia.
We were welcomed with open arms upon our arrival despite just randomly turning up at their doorstep, and within 10 minutes we were inside the cat centre entertaining around 20 cats all waiting for adoption. If we could have taken every single one of them home with us we would have done!
Soi Dog is mainly run by some permanent staff who oversee the care of the animals on a day to day basis, however they also heavily rely on volunteers from anywhere in the world. One of these volunteers gave us an informative tour around the foundation showing us the many areas in which the dogs were looked after. We were truly astounded at the amount of dedication, time, effort and money that had gone in to creating such a heart warming sanctuary. When you spend time with these animals you can clearly see just how well looked after they now are, and how much healthier and happier they appear, for there is no price that can be placed on that.
We left with smiles on our faces, having met some incredible dogs and cats and also some inspiring people. We certainly won’t forget meeting volunteers such as Gwenda and Catie as well as the founders John and Gill Dalley who began the charity back in 2003. What a legacy they shall leave behind.
This day we shall never forget, and we can’t wait to return to Phuket to simply volunteer at the wonderment that is the Soi Dog Foundation.
